Bar Bruno 06-29-2013

Location: 520 Henry St. BK
Time: 3pm
People: RB, CK and myself

Feelings: Bar Bruno,"home of the micheladas and fish tacos," is a casual modern Mexican spot in Carroll Gardens, conveniently located by our favorite ice creamery, Brooklyn Farmacy on Henry Street. I hear that on weekends, people savor their margaritas and cocktails while waiting for a table at Lucali across the street.

The food you experience here is simple, comfort food with Latin flair. The retro-chic atmosphere is equally comforting and relaxed. This is the type of a place that the older Carroll Garden residents that have been here for years as well as newcomers can both grab beer and enjoy the night.

Frozen margaritas, bloody mary's and mimosas are only $4 during brunch, and you will be begging to change the NY state law of prohibiting alcohol before noon on Sundays. One of their brunch dishes, "Huevos a la Mexicana" ($11, scrambled eggs, jalapeno, tomato, onions, black beans, roasted potatoes) is satisfying. The eggs were overcooked and under-salted, but the flavors of potatoes were promising.

RB ordered "Grilled Chorizo Sandwich" ($14 with fried egg, avocado, manchego, frisee), which he did enjoy but thought similarly that the fried egg was overcooked. He was looking forward to the gooey yolk over the salty chorizo.

Being in Carroll Gardens, kids menu is prerequisite. All kids meal ($7) is served with french fries, and CK thoroughly enjoyed his super cheesy yet under-seasoned baked mac and 3 cheese.

The service is spot on, and warm ambiance is indeed perfect for the neighborhood.
