Beyond Sushi 06-19-2013

Location: Inside Chelsea Market, 75 9th Ave.
Time: 12pm

Feelings: I don't know how many times I've heard, "You are from Japan, why don't you eat raw fish?" Sushi really means cooked vinegared rice with various ingredients, and although it is often combined with fish, it does not necessarily have to be. The idea of vegan sushi by Chef Guy (of Godron Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen)'s Beyond Sushi is not new in traditional Japanese concept, however, tasty low carb organic vegan rolls, something on the same line as macrobiotic sushi, is new and inventive.

With black forbidden rice or six-grain rice, each combination of roll is beautifully crafted with a fantastic flavor and texture balance. The made to order rolls are reasonably priced at $6.50 with a side of dipping sauce such as mango chili or white miso.

The 'Pickle Me' ($6.50, eight pieces with six grain rice, gobo, carrot, pickled daiko, avocado with carrot ginger dipping sauce) is crunchy and fresh. The ingredients are so fresh and already flavorful that the dipping sauce is almost overkill. This is the kind of sushi roll that anyone can enjoy--from kids, pregnant women to carnivores to bros.

Beyond Sushi also offers fresh made juices, salads and ricer paper wraps. Currently, they also have a Union Square location, but how about opening one in Midtown??

I'm not a sushi fan but I'd venture out to try this.

And don't you love people trying to tell you about your own nation's food? Augh.
