The Shop at Andaz 5th Ave. 06-28-2011

Location: 485 5th Ave.
Time: 12:30pm
People: FA and myself

Feelings: I always pass by The Shop at Andaz after picking up lunch from Sunrise or Mai on 41st Street and wondered what it was. It turns out it is Andaz Hotel by Hyatt with the dining spot called The Shop. This farm to table restaurant serves many downtown New York favorites--from Russ and Daughters, Pickle Guys, Katz to Il Laboratorio del Gelato and Sullivan Street Bakery.

The prices are business lunch friendly; appetizers from $10-$16, sandwiches from $14-$18, and entrees at $17-$30. This would be a great place to introduce business associates outside of NYC to the quick highlight of our downtown culinary world...while staying in midtown.

We started off with "spinach and lentil dhal with chilies on toasted bread," which was light, flavorful and really a perfect summer appetizer. We both ordered Lobster Rolls, which was full of lobster chunks and a hint of mayo. The bread was not as soft and buttery as I hoped to, but the meatiness of the lobster compensated.

The best part of this restaurant is their coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee. It is always difficult to find a decent cup of coffee in Midtown. Why not stop at The Shop for an amazing cup of coffee and tasty baked goods from Sullivan Street Bakery without trekking all the way to 10th Avenue? They also carry chocolate from Mast Brothers as well--The Shop is indeed a little downtown in Midtown.
