Return of Gobo 01-06-2010

Location: 401 6th Ave.
Time: 6pm
People: MK and myself

Feelings: My friend, MK is moving to upstate New York, so to say goodbye, we headed out to our favorite vegan restaurant, Gobo for one last time. MK, who is a vegan, sadly declared that although there may not be a vegan restaurant in her new town, she will still be leaving New York City for a new and amazing opportunity! If Gobo can't stop her, what can?

MK ordered her favorites: scallion pancakes with mango salsa ($9) and pine nut vegetable medley with lettuce wraps ($13). The pancakes were a bit greasy but filling and tasty. Unfortunately the lettuce for the wrap was bitter and inedible, so it was a good thing the scallion pancakes satisfied her appetite. My usual green tea noodle with vegan bolognese sauce ($17) was delicious, and the noodle was perfectly chewy. The sauce is extremely flavorful, and every time I eat it, I can't believe it's vegan. I'm not sure how they do it.

Our dessert special ($8) with soy cream and cookies were not overly sweet as many other desserts at Gobo. It was a little difficult to eat since the cookies were very crispy, but it was light and a perfectly sized dessert.

I love that every time I leave Gobo, I am full and satisfied but never feel overstuffed or bloaty. I appreciate their fresh ingredients (I wish the lettuce wasn't bitter, however) and sensible cooking. It is truly satisfying to share a refreshingly healthy meal with a friend whose bright future is right in front of her. Both my mind and stomach feel cleansed, and I can prepare for another day ahead. Good luck to you, MK!

i like Gobo too, but the prices are kind of high, especially the dinner menu. Kind of makes me feel why not just go to a Chinese restaurant and order the vegetarian dishes instead. But I do like the setting.

I agree! It is expensive there.

Their lunch specials are pretty decently priced, I think you can get out for about 15 a person w/ appetizer.
