The Kitchen Block Party 09-17-2011

Location: 19th Street between 10th and 11th
Time: 2pm
People: RB, CK and myself

Feelings: On a nice Saturday afternoon, we visited our friend StevenC, who was volunteering at The Kitchen Block Party, a free kid friendly street fair right under The High Line. There were dozens of free art and craft booths along with performance art and bands. CK was too young for many booths, but we enjoyed their unique photo booths and of course, food vendors.

Asia Dogs, Chelsea Thai, Choncho's Tacos, Coconut Rob, Je & Jo Ice Cream were available, and the lines were not too long. Since RB kept mentioning Asia Dogs near his work in SoHo, we decided to try their "Ito" (Japanese curry and kimchi apple) with a veggie dog, "Mel+Steve" (Asian sesame slaw, scallions and sesame seeds) with a veggie dog, and WangDing (Chinese BBQ pork belly and onions) with a chicken dog. The curry from "Ito" was bland and not as decadent as I had expected, but "Mel+Steve" was flavorful, and the tanginess and crispy texture of slaw complimented the dog. I assume the concept of Asia Dogs is similar to Japa Dog, a popular Japanese hot dog stand in Vancouver. It is a shame that they don't have Japa Dog in NYC, but Asia Dog would certainly suffice.

The Kitchen Block Party is a great way to welcome the fall season while celebrating the creativity and diversity of Chelsea. The Kitchen holds this event annually, so if you miss it this year, definitely stop by next year and relax at High Line afterwards.

Was just hanging out with friends from Vancouver the last couple of days. They said that Japa Dog is opening up a storefront in the East Village soon.

Sounds like you're feeling better. Thank goodness. A food blogger cannot maintain a reputation this way.
