SkyIce Sweet & Savory 07-21-2002

Location: 63 5th Ave. BK
Time: 5pm
People: RB, CK and myself

Feelings: Forget your boring ol' vanilla. After our delightful experience at Hunan Delight in Park Slope, we stopped by at SkyIce, a small Thai joint that serves all natural homemade ice cream as well as savory Thai staples. This cute little spot on the corner of 5th Avenue in Park Slope is run by a lovely family from Chiang Mai in Thailand. There is no table service here since the main attraction is their phenomenal ice cream, but the service is extremely friendly and cordial. CK accidentally dropped his water, but they said not to worry with a genuine smile. (I'm sorry!)

The selections of organic and vegan ice cream and sorbet are impressive. Along with more common options like Black Sesame, Green Tea, Mango and Caramel Sea Salt, you will see exotic items like Sesame Seaweed, Basil, Brown Rice, Mangosteen and Durian, and there is even a flavor mixed with vegetables. What a great way for kids to eat vegetables! Actually, this would be an awesome way for adults to eat vegetables.

We picked Thai Tea and Cucumber Lime, hoping two will balance the palate together. Thai Tea is sweet and creamy just like the tea with vibrantly adorable orange color. Cucumber Lime acts more of a palate cleanser, wiping away any extra creaminess from the previous bite. Often times in summer, ice cream has a tendency to leave you thirstier than before, but with the help of Cucumber Lime flavor, we left Park Slope refreshed and energized...until we saw the rusty and questionable appearance of the home of Brooklyn Nets, Barclays Center. Is that a finished product? Are they taking 'rustic' to the next level literally with rust? Whatever that is, Mr. Jay-Z and Deron Williams should try these ambitious flavors of Sesame Seaweed and Durian nearby.
