Hunan Delight 07-21-2012

Location: 752 Union St. BK
Time: 4pm
People: RB, CK and myself

Feelings: After checking out "The Jungle Book" puppet show at Puppetworks in Park Slope, this hungry family of three stumbled upon what seemed to be a standard Chinese restaurant in the corner of Union. The decor is clean and pleasantly modern, but I had zero expectations. The lack of decent Chinese restaurants in BoCoCa taught me not to expect much when it comes to Chinese food in Brooklyn..unless you head to South of Sunset Park.

But this Hunan-centric eatery was a pleasant surprise to say the least. This is a solid New York style Chinese spot. Its clean atmosphere directly translates to the flavors, and you get a little more than your standard greasy American Chinese food.

We shared Steamed Vegetable Bun ($2.95 for two), which I can't remember ever seeing at an American Chinese joint. It was fluffy, soft and tasty, and I appreciated that there was even a small "dim sum" section on the menu. Vegans would be pleased to find their extensive vegetarian section as well.

My Shanghai style "Stripped Bean Curd" noodle soup ($7.25 with black mushrooms) was rich in flavor, and the noodles were adequately chewy. Each fine piece of stripped bean curd soaked up all the juicy flavors from the broth and mushrooms.

RB's crispy noodle clay pot was delicious and nourishing, and although it was nearly 100 degrees outside, he ate every last steamy bit with a sweaty smile.

Hunan Delight is delightful. And they are even more delightful to kids. I understand this is the standard Park Slope procedure, but their baby readiness is notably exceptional. A clean high chair appears promptly without us asking, a plastic cup with a straw and a plastic plate are presented with a friendly smile from the server. I don't know what came first, the babies, or the baby friendly service. Park Slope, you spoil us.

We used to love this place when we lived in BK - solid veggie chinese options. Good tofu texture.

I just read that they deliver all the way to cobble hill, so we'll see...!!

I've been a fan of this place for 12 or so years. Good, solid Hunan food. The chicken dumplings have the most delicate wrapping and delightfully gingery filling--I highly recommend them. Also one of the few places that offers Chinese broccoli with fresh garlic, another favorite of mine. Go back! :-)
