Carroll Gardens Classic Diner 09-26-2009

Location: 155 Smith St.
Time: 1am
People: RB and myself

Feelings: After enjoying Tigers and Monkeys and Wildstreet at Glam Rock night on a Bushwick rooftop, we stopped at a 24 hour diner on Smith Street on our way home. It was a cold, rainy night on the rooftop, and I just wanted a warm cup of coffee and some greasy fries. My expectation from 24/7 diner on a Saturday night was rather low, and I just wanted to stop somewhere to warm my feet.

Carroll Gardens Classic Diner is a Carroll Gardens' classic diner that also delivers 24/7. The place was packed with post party crowds with their pre- hangover symptoms. The service was very friendly and quick considering the late hours. I had a decaf coffee in a big diner mug in my hand within five minutes.

RB and I shared grape leaves ($7.95) and seasoned waffle fries ($4.25). It has been so long since I went to a diner that I forgot about their large portions. The grape leaves were not very exciting, the rice was dry, and I was not sure what I was supposed to do with two huge blocks of salty feta cheese. But the fries-- oh the seasoned waffle fries! They exceeded all my expectations. They were crisp, fresh and seasoned just right with the right amount of greasiness. They tasted like how Checkers seasoned fries should taste like without overly greasy. We often wander around for late night eats on weekends, but the waffle fries at Carroll Gardens Classic Diner will be my staple for sure.
