Sayonara JAS Mart 23rd Street 05-27-2009

Location: 34 E 23rd st.

Feelings: I often go to my favorite Japanese grocery store, Jas Mart on 23rd Street almost every week. Today, I walked over there to get my weekly Japanese necessities (I'll leave that to your imagination) and it was closed. The place was completely empty. Closed. Shut. Gone. I stood in front of the empty storefront almost in tears. Why do you torment me, Jas Mart? Did I not shop there enough for you? Is there something I could have done more of? Please promise me that you will not close the St. Marks location. If you did, I would actually have to move to San Francisco or somewhere with more Japanese grocery stores nearby.

I told some girls at the library they can get furikake here. Now they're going to think I'm a liar.

Sad! Now JAS Mart on 110th and Broadway by Columbia University is closed too. I hope that the recession doesn't continue to deprive us of much-needed asian grocery stores. That was the closest one for us on the Upper West Side at 40 blocks away!

Anyone know what the alternatives are? My family LOVED JAS mart.

Actually I just found there's an M2M store up here.
I haven't been but I hear that they have most everything Asian.
Anyone else?
And are you sure the last JAS Mart will stay open?

oh yeah M2M is pretty good too. They have Korean stuff as well. I also go to Katagiri on 59th St (less crowded) and Zaiya etc on 41st st (more of prepared food tho)..
