Acme Bar & Grill 05-22-2010

Location: 9 Great Jones St.
Time: 5pm
People: RB and myself

Feelings: We dined at Acme years ago before there was such thing as a food blog or random people taking macro lens food photos at restaurants. Since RB is a big fan of Cajun and spicy food in general, we decided to take a break from shopping and treat ourselves with Southern comfort food.

The service was very quick and friendly, and I really appreciated that the waitstaff did not make any comments about my pregnant belly. Seriously, if you ever see a pregnant woman in public, don't make any comments whether negative or positive. We have heard everything you have to say. The only thing we want from you is the one thing we don't seem to get: a seat on the subway.

The place was very spacious and approachable with its kitschy decor, which explains why it was crowded with both tourists and locals. I could see this place doing quite well in suburbs as well as in Manhattan.

RB ordered Creole Jambalaya ($13.95, Andouille sausage, chicken, and crawfish tails stewed in spicy tomato sauce), but it was not as spicy as he had expected. He selected some hot sauce from the table and made his own spicy concoction. One of the most notable things about this establishment is that you are surrounded by every hot sauce you can imagine! You can make your dish as spicy as your heart desires.

My Blackened Shrimp Salad ($12.95) was decent. The shrimp was cleaned and cooked well, and the suggestive spiciness went very well with the salad. I also liked that they brought oil and vinegar and a side of dressing without asking for them.

Acme has a hint of college bar and suburban pub restaurant feel that I would usually avoid, but it is still approachable for a gal like myself. It does not try to be cool or pretentious. It's just simply casual and friendly, and their delicious cornbread is hard to ignore! This is the kind of a place my Americana obsessed parents would enjoy as well as your out of town family who are used to Chili's but want something new and different.

If you haven't been there already, try Great Jones Cafe. It looks dingier, but the food is really top notch. It's a couple of blocks away from Acme.

I love Acme! My husband and I went there on a few of our first dates. I love their collard greens and cornbread. Their BBQ shrimp is good too.

Acme disappointed me too many times as a homesick undergrad trying to find Southern food in cold NYC. The vast array of hot sauces is probably the best attraction.
