Sigmund Pretzel Shop 03-20-2010

Location: 29 Ave. B
Time: 5pm
People: RB and myself

Feelings: Sekita recommended me this pretzel shop in East Village last year, but unfortunately the shop's schedule and mine were never compatible. They are closed on Mondays and only open until 8pm every other day. Who knew my random soft pretzel craving would appear only on Mondays and always after 8pm. Conveniently this time, my craving arrived at 5pm on Saturday when we were in the area, so we were finally able to enjoy warm, soft, and organic pretzels at Sigmund.

Sigmund is an adorable bakery and cafe with tables and benches, and it is perfect for people watching on a warm Saturday afternoon. They not only serve variety of pretzels, pretzel sandwiches and baked goods but also RB's favorite, La Colombe coffee and some homemade tea.

I consider soft pretzels to be more of a dessert dish, so I tried their cinnamon raisin flavor with Nutella dip ($3.50, dip is free). We all know that anything tastes amazing with Nutella, and I honestly believe that Nutella can bring about world peace. This pretzel review might not be accurate because of the Nutella variable, but the pretzel itself was also delicious. It was salty and subtly sweet, and the perfectly chewy texture somehow reminded me of a bagel.

RB on the other hand thinks of pretzels as Southern German bretzels: to be consumed with beer and mustard. He ordered regular salted flavor with herb goat cheese dip. He did not think the pretzel was anything spectacular but thought the dip was very light and delicious.

I would love to try the caramel pecan flavor next time (they were out this time.), but I am not sure when I will be able to visit Sigmund again. Pretzels are unfortunately not something I would want before 8pm.

Thanks for the post! I didn't know this place existed and now it is on my list!

I'm a huge fan of Auntie Anne's pretzels (superior to Pretzel Time as far as I'm concerned) and they're pretzels are warm, sweet, and buttery, so I'd be interested in trying a place with more varities and hopefully less butter (though I do love it so) and who don't charge you for dip!
