Bagels with Avocado? 03-07-2010

Feelings: I love bagels. I have loved bagels since when I was a little girl in Japan although they had more of Montreal style bagels. People in Japan usually eat bagels without any toppings, so I had to get used to the idea of bagel with schmear when I moved here. One of the great things about living in Brooklyn is that there are so many great bagel shops. While I get my usual bagel satisfaction from La Bagel on Court Street, RB gets his for free at work...with slices of avocado.

When he told me that his Londoner coworkers eat bagels with avocado, I was slightly confused. He said he sees no cream cheese, butter, peanut butter, jam, or tofu spread. Just slices of avocado and/or tomato. I am not sure if this is something only his coworkers do or Londoners in general took interests in doing.

We recreated this bagel with slices of avocado at home. RB showed me how he eats it: fold half a bagel with avocado like a slice of pizza. It definitely tasted healthier, and it was more filling compared to other creamy spread. I still prefer butter or peanut butter, but I could see how avocado is a good alternative. Those Londoners know what they are doing.

I've also tried hummus and when I'm desperate straight tahini on toasted bagels. Hummus with tomato is also delicious on a toasted bagel.
